Matt has been training athletes of all ages in the DC area for over 10 years. He spent 3 years as the Strength and Conditioning Coach at St. John’s College High School Men’s Basketball and is the current Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the two-time State and WCAC champion Bishop Ireton Women’s Lacrosse program in Alexandria, VA. Matt has worked with several professional basketball teams in China, as well as Taiwan’s Men’s National Team.

His interest in sports training grew in high school and while playing Division 1 baseball at George Washington University. Matt’s unique understanding of the demands of both the high school and college athlete, help him create a dynamic training experience that results in athletes who consistently outperform their competition.

BLAIR O’DONOVAN | Co-Owner

Blair is the founder of Healthy Baller and has been training athletes in the DC area since 2000. His background and creative training techniques make him a leading expert on productive training for basketball players and have led him to work with several NBA players and teams around the world. He was most recently the Director of Physical Preparation for the Washington Wizards from 2018-2020.

Blair was the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the prestigious Nike All-Asia Basketball Camp held in China and the Jordan Brand Classic for several years. Locally, he was the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the nationally renowned Nike Elite Gonzaga High School Men’s Basketball program as well as the Montrose Christian Men’s Basketball team. Blair has also worked as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Washington Capitals (NHL), the Baltimore Ravens (NFL) and the Loyola University Men’s Basketball program.

Gussie has been training lacrosse athletes across the DMV and country for over 10 years in various positions, skill levels, and ages. As a former Division I athlete at the University of Southern California and current US Women's National Team member (two-time gold medalist), she brings an unparalleled wealth of knowledge to the table.

As the current owner and director of Capital Girls Lacrosse Club, she is passionate about helping athletes achieve their goals at the next level through a fundamentally focused approach. Gussie brings her business background and entrepreneurial mindset to our team as a Co-Owner and manager of the facility.

CHRIS WYCHOCK | Co-Owner

A former Division I athlete, Chris brings over 10 years of experience training athletes of all ages and skill levels from numerous sports.

After earning his Exercise Science degree at Towson University, Chris worked with Towson University Strength & Conditioning and University of Maryland Sports Performance, as well as JDyer/Johns Hopkins Strength & Conditioning. He also worked alongside and mentored some of the top Speed and Strength Coaches in the country.

Chris loved working as a Strength & Conditioning coach but knew he wanted a larger platform to reach people and use his passion for fitness training and athlete development. This led him to open Capital Performance Training in 2015, a sports performance center located in Bethesda, MD.

Chris is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through The National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is also certified in Applied Functional Science (AFS) through the Gray Institute.


Performance Coaches

WES DUNNING | Performance Coach

Wes was drawn to conditioning and healthy living while playing basketball at Gonzaga College High School, where he was trained by Healthy Baller co-founder and then Gonzaga Strength Coach Blair O’Donovan. His interest in training athletes expanded while playing basketball at Hampton University, and he immediately began training athletes after graduating in 2013. Wes has coached at both the Nike Elite Gonzaga High School Men’s Basketball and AU Basketball programs.

JONATHAN CUSTODIO | Performance Coach

After completing an internship at Healthy Baller, Jonathan began working with athletes, in which he spent several months learning how to program, coach, and train athletes. As a former athlete, Jonathan traveled to Spain, where he gained insight into training professional athletes at the highest level. A kinesiology major at the University of Maryland, Jonathan learned how important it is to take care of the body both on and off the field. Before working as a coach with Healthy Baller, Jonathan worked as a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym, where he learned how to communicate with various clients. In his time with Healthy Baller as an intern, Jonathan recognized the passion and commitment of coaches to their athletes. Now, as on coach on staff, Jonathan brings the same dedication and attention to detail.

Jonathan volunteers as a performance coach with his old high school basketball travel team during his free time. He consistently emphasizes the importance of taking care of your body year-round, whether on or off the court/ field.

MATTHEW PULLENG | Exercise Specialist

Matthew began training athletes after interning with Healthy Baller for several months. Matthew has always been passionate about sports. He played high school soccer and continues to play recreational. Matthew was drawn to strength and conditioning in 2013 when he began his educational journey in obtaining his Associates degree in Health Fitness. During this time, he worked as a Physical Therapy Technician and gained experience working with rehabilitating patients. From here, Matthew continued to pursue his bachelors in Exercise Science through Salisbury University at The Universities of Shady Grove where he graduated 'Summa Cum Laude'. During this period, Matthew also earned his 'Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist' through NSCA. The internship experience with Healthy Baller was where Matthew witnessed the passion and dedication given to each athlete by coaches and wanted to instill the same values himself working with athletes. 

Matthew has lived in four countries including Germany, England, and the Bahamas. In his spare time, Matthew volunteers with the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department as an EMT. 

MADDY ZARCHIN | Performance Coach

Maddy has always loved fitness and helping others achieve their goals. She is dedicated to helping athletes maximize their potential through a holistic approach to performance training. 

Maddy grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland and swam for National Capital Swim Club and Rockville Montgomery Swim Club. She went on to swim collegiately at Brigham Young University where she graduated with a degree in political science. After working as a government contractor, she realized that her real passion is helping athletes train confidently to reach their athletic potentials. She is currently pursuing a masters degree in applied physiology and human performance, and coaches swimming at All Star Aquatics.

 

JUSTIN GRAHAM | Performance Coach

Justin Graham is a dedicated professional in the world of performance training. With a background in high school basketball, Justin's journey into the fitness industry began when he discovered his passion for training others during his senior year of high school. This initial spark of enthusiasm has only grown stronger over time. This spark led Justin to study kinesiology at the University of Maryland and to become a CPT. 

In the summer of 2023, Justin had the opportunity to intern at Healthyballer, an experience that would shape his career. Impressed by his dedication and skill, the team at Healthyballer welcomed him on shortly after his internship, recognizing his potential to make a significant impact.

 Justin prioritizes building strong, personal relationships with athletes that go beyond training sessions. He values trust and camaraderie, believing that these connections are vital for unlocking an athlete's potential. With a commitment to excellence and a genuine passion for mentoring, Justin positively impacts the field of performance training, helping athletes reach their physical peak while fostering a supportive community.

WILLIE MCGONNELL | Performance Coach

Willie first realized how much training could improve athletic performance after suffering a knee injury during his teenage years. While in high school, he played football, wrestled, and found his passion for training. During his senior season, Willie was able to recognize the incredible impact that training was having on his performance, and his passion for the field only grew from there.

After high school, Willie went to the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied exercise physiology. It was there that he discovered his love for strength and conditioning and working more specifically with athletes. He spent some time shadowing the wrestling and baseball teams before taking an internship with Pitt football. During his time with Pitt football, he was able to work with both the college athletes as well as NFL alumni, during their off-season training.

As an online influencer, speaker, and writer, Teddy has grown to be known worldwide for his work in the field of sports medicine. Teddy emphasizes injury prevention, strength training, and long-term planning as a means to staying healthy and performing at the highest level. In addition to working with professional and elite performers, Teddy enjoys working with lifters, recreational athletes, and active adults.

Wesley’s treatment philosophy centers around movement, strengthening, and education. Having personally suffered 2 ACL tears from playing basketball, Wesley is extremely passionate about helping athletes recover from knee injuries and return to their sport. Wesley’s treatments prioritize regaining full mobility, strength, and confidence to reduce the likelihood of injury recurrence.

Alyssa was a 3-sport high school athlete and Division 1 lacrosse player. Her passion for sports led her to pursue a career in sports medicine. As a certified strength and conditioning coach, Alyssa knows what it takes to rebuild, return to sport safely, and compete at the highest levels. She takes pride in connecting with her patients to help them gain strength, build confidence, and accomplish their goals.

Gaby was a 3-sport athlete in high school, ran Track & Field at the University of Maryland, and is still a competitive runner. Her personal injury experiences and athletic career sparked her journey to physical therapy alongside a special interest in treating endurance athletes. She is dedicated to her work and passionate about empowering her patients to help them reach their individual goals. She emphasizes performance-based injury prevention and rehabilitation through strength, mobility, and adequate recovery.

Gary is a Northern California Bay Area native who landed in the D.C. area after attending Howard University and meeting his wife on the East Coast. Gary took a post grad year to complete an orthopedic residency and go on to become a board certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. Gary is well versed in the latest and best approaches to all bone and joint injuries including the hip, knee, shoulder, and spine, with a special focus on ACL rehab and injury reduction.

Pete was a multi-sport athlete in high school, a collegiate athlete, and later played professional baseball. He combines his athletic experience with a passion for strength and conditioning to deliver personalized, evidence-based care. LEE SOMMERS | Personal Trainer

Lee is a leader in the fitness industry whose multi-faceted career spans 18 years. He was the Director of Fitness at Sport and Health Corporation for 14 years, and is also credited as a Master Personal Trainer, a fitness educator/presenter, and an Explosive Performance Coach. He has worked with Nation’s Capital Swim Club, USA Swimming, and Fitter & Faster Swim Tour. Lee has a BS in Exercise Science, and certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and Functional Movement Systems. He furthered his education through Athletes Performance Institute (EXOS) and Resistance Training Specialists.

Lee believes that failing to prepare is preparing to fail. His purpose driven approach highly emphasizes injury prevention and performance enhancement, which has far surpassed even the most ambitious of client goals, including athletes of all levels from high school, college, professional to Olympic champions.

GEOVANNY ARDON | Personal Trainer

Geovanny has been training athletes of all ages for the past 14 years. After obtaining his Government Politics and Communications degree from the University of Maryland, Geovanny worked the front desk at Chevy Chase Athletic Club, where he sparked his enthusiasm for health and wellness. He received his personal training certification and worked with clients part-time while working full-time as a government consultant for public housing at the Department of Urban Development. Realizing health and wellness were his passion, Geovanny decided to become a full-time personal trainer.

He is certified by the National Strength Professionals Association and holds several specialty certifications with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He focuses on corrective balance, coordination, and strength that involves flexibility and mobility for special populations. Geovanny continues to train for triathlons, short and long-distance running and has taught kickboxing, spinning, and BOSU balance high-intensity interval cardiovascular training.

KEVIN WAGMAN | Personal Trainer

Kevin has been coaching athletes in the Washington, D.C., area for more than 10 years. He swam competitively in the Montgomery County Swim League for 13 years and continued to swim after high school at the club level. Kevin is the head swim and dive coach at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., and, during the summer, is the head coach of the swim team at Mohican Swimming Pool in Bethesda, MD. Year-round, Kevin coaches age group and senior swimming with All-Star Aquatics. He earned his BS in Exercise Sports Science at Elon University and after graduation, Kevin competed in the Physique category of the National Physique Committee bodybuilding competitions.

Before working at Healthy Baller, Kevin was a trainer at Golds Gym in Rockville, and at Capital Performance in Bethesda, where he worked with athletes of all ages to help them reach their fitness goals. He now works primarily with swimmers, both those that are healthy and those who are recovering from injury. Kevin’s clients range from middle school swimmers to Division I college athletes.

ANDREA “ANNIE” HAY | Personal Trainer

Annie has always had a fascination with exercise and training. She played Division 1 soccer in college and went on to play professionally overseas, only to have her career plagued by injuries. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Annie wanted to help other young athletes achieve their full potential while staying healthy, so she graduated with a BS with honors in Exercise Science from Towson University while continuing her athletic career. From there, she took her talents overseas while pursuing her interest in the human body, and upon her return, she began her personal training career working with high-level athletes to total novices.

A certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Annie specializes in athletic performance, speed/agility/quickness development, weight loss/nutrition, flexibility, and strength training. She helps individuals achieve their goals through intelligently designed programming, nutritional guidance, and a confident mindset.
